About the Friends

We are a volunteer 501(c)(3) that raises money for the Rappahannock County Public Library and runs the Book Barn. Each board member is passionate about the library and its success.

Our mission

To financially support the Rappahannock County Library programming, activities and day-to-day operations that enrich the lives of county residents and library patrons of all ages.

In practice that means we run the Book Barn, we raise money through financial and book donations, and we hand it to the library.

What the Friends do

  • The Book Barn

    We run the Book Barn beside the library. Everything on the shelves is donated. Everything it earns goes back to the library.

  • Grounds

    We fund emergency and seasonal landscaping of the library grounds.

  • Computer help

    We fully fund a weekly basic computer help assistant, giving patrons one-on-one support over an extended period.

  • Youth programs

    We sponsor many youth programs, including wildlife educational programs, music programs, puppet shows, and magic shows.

  • Summer reading

    We contribute to the youth and adult summer reading programs, including donations of gift baskets and many gift cards for the adult program.

  • Library staff

    We support and celebrate the library staff, including the celebration of National Library Week.

  • Booklist

    We sponsor an annual subscription to Booklist, a monthly reader advisory magazine for staff and patrons.

  • Community appreciation

    We contribute toward the food at the community appreciation event.

Who we are not

We are not the library, and we are not the Library Board of Trustees. The library is a county institution with its own director and its own governing board. We are the independent nonprofit alongside it that raises money and runs the Book Barn. We are also not Friends of the Rappahannock, the river conservation group, and we are not the Friends of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library down in Fredericksburg. Good organizations, all. Different ones.
